LUTON LOTTERY WINNERS

October 22, 2010

A lucky Luton couple had a life-changing start to their Easter holiday when they found out they had won £10.7 million on The National Lottery. Just hours before they were due to jet off to Italy with friends, Sandra and Martyn White, of Sundon Park, looked online for their flight details and found an email from Camelot to say they had won the huge rollover jackpot on April 8.

But the shocked pair, who had previously only won £10 or matched four numbers before on the Lotto, thought they were the victims of a prank. Martyn, 53, said: “I was convinced we hadn’t won. I thought someone was scamming us to be honest. I spent a week thinking this can’t be true.” The new millionaires, who have lived in Luton for 20 years even refused to splash out on the week-long break for fear that they had made a mistake. And when they returned home, the reality sunk in, and at a celebration at Luton Hoo yesterday, Martyn and Sandra received their cheque for £10784075 in front of the nation’s press.

The ecstatic couple have already resigned from work – Martyn was a sales manager for a vehicle electronics company and Sandra, 48, worked as a pastoral carer at Lealands High School – and have already started looking for their dream house in the area. The lucky numbers on April 8 were 8, 10, 21, 23, 25 and 48 – made up of ages of the White family, including Martyn’s mother.
